McClain High School is located in Greenfield, Ohio. Edward Lee McClain was born in 1861 and grew up in Greenfield. He became wealthy through his hard work, vision and industry development. A philanthropist and lifetime resident of southern Ohio, Mr. McClain presented the community with a gift to build a school, which began construction in 1914. The high school is a wonderful facility loaded with paintings, murals, statues throughout the classrooms and hallways – magnificent and a must see.

When Edward Lee McClain presented his gift, his chief idea was having an institution for the ‘ betterment and happiness’ of the individuals involved. Over a hundred years later the McClain High School continues to transform, redesigning a building exclusively for the physical development of the student athlete.

The school now has a 10,000 square foot strength and conditioning space and a former athletic director, strength coach, college and professional football player – Mark Bihl – selected to manage and develop the school’s athletic performance.

A great addition and place for each student athlete to train and Get Strong.

The triceps brachii is a large three-headed muscle located on the back of the upper arm. The tricep is the primary extensor of the elbow consisting of the long, medial and lateral heads.

When exercising at 0 degrees elevation the long head of the triceps brachii produces higher muscle force and activation than the lateral and medial heads. There is no significant difference between the forces of the lateral and medial heads at this angle.

Once shoulder elevation reaches 90 degrees the medial head of the tricep produces significantly higher muscle force which continues while raising your arm to an overhead position. At 90 degrees there is no difference in force between the lateral and long head of the triceps. Raising your arm straight overhead is approximately an 185 degree movement and as the elevation approaches this angle the lateral head force begins to exceed  the long heads.

Putting all this in terms for training — the long head of the tricep plays the main role of extending the elbow and as the shoulder angle elevation increases the medial head takes over. This is an important consideration for fully developing the triceps brachii when training to Get Strong.

Unilateral movements are especially important for strength coaches, athletic trainers and physical therapists as there are many developmental benefits of using single limb strength training; returning to play, surgical rehabilitation, correction of imbalances and muscular adaptations. All these considerations are important and beneficial for athletics, as well as, day to day living.

A trainee having one limb stronger than the other can be corrected with unilateral exercises. There is also the benefit of ‘cross education’, the physiological term that is used to explain  that training an unaffected limb initiates a neurological response that causes enhanced growth of an undertrained contralateral limb.

Winning in competition can come down to the most minor detail and the smallest of margins – something as simple as a muscular imbalance.

In studies it is clear that unilateral resistance training is superior for enhancing activities that emphasize unilateral leg and arm performance. Get each limb Strong include unilateral training as part of your exercise regime.

The lat pull-down is one of the most popular compound back exercises in strength training. Glenohumeral external and internal rotation, as well as, scapula movements can all be addressed. Grasping position alters kinematics and selecting different hand positions can be used to augment healthy shoulder mechanics.

Muscle activation differs with different width and hand variations during a movement. The Pendulum Lat Pull Pro provides a variety of handle styles with interchangeable grip widths to augment development.

An example is a trainee may select rotary handles to target the entire lat during a workout as the weight being pulled remains constant as the biomechanics of the body are changing.

Lat Pull Pro with Rotary Handles using a Wide Grip

Not only do the various handles on the Lat Combo Pull isolate specific anatomical regions of the back, but bilateral and unilateral training options on the Lat Pull Pro are significant for maximizing development and rehabilitation. Importantly, the seat height can be changed for individuals of different heights so all can experience the same feelings and results the machine has to offer.

A great way to Get Strong.
